MAKE YOUR PROPERTY RAIN READY
The January 22, 2026 storm in the Bay of Plenty demonstrated the scale of rainfall that can affect Omokoroa.
Rainfall is getting heavier.
Heavy rainfall events are becoming more frequent
Optimally damp soil has good strength
Wet soil is heavier and has less strength to hold itself together and sustain loads.
Excessive water in soil must be avoided.
This must be our focal point.

THE NUMBERS
January 22, 2026
- Tauranga: 274mm rain
- The Port: ~400mm
- Omokoroa: 300mm+ All in 24 hours
On an 800m² property (common in Omokoroa):
300mm rain = 240,000 litres ≈ 7 shipping containers of water
- When rainfall intensity exceeds what the ground can absorb, water moves across properties. Flooding may occur.
- When rainfall lingers or ponds, water infiltrates into the ground.
- Excessive infiltration increases soil moisture and reduces slope stability.
- In heavy rainfall, water must move efficiently to drains without pooling or pause.
Managing where that water goes reduces risk.
Are we ready for the next 300mm?
ABOUT RAIN READY
Rain Ready is a voluntary community initiative supporting practical,
evidence-based stormwater management and action in partnership with residents and Council.
A Rain Ready property:
- Directs roof and hard-surface water to lawful drainage systems.
- Eliminates soak holes where rain water seeps into the soil.
- Guides lawn and garden runoff to boundary drains (shared surface watercourses that carry overland flow safely to discharge points)
- Uses inserted horizontal hillside drains to extract water and lower the water table.
- Conducts retaining wall drainage safely to surface drains and boundary drains
